Broken or malfunctioning garage doors can cause dangerous accidents. They can be a threat to people (especially children) and can also damage your vehicles. This can cause you (or your family) a lot of pain and cost you a lot of money in the form of repairs and panel beating to damaged cars.
For businesses, this can also result in costly workers compensation claims or even the potential of lawsuits. To avoid mishaps, a garage door must always be repaired immediately, and this can be done with our 24-hour garage door emergency service.

An Expert Guide To Garage Door Springs & When It’s Time To Replace Them

If you’re like most Australians, your garage door is one of the most used (and relied upon) entrances to your home. Springs are responsible for opening and closing your garage door, which work by stretching out or uncoiling to allow for this movement.

While the average lifecycle of a garage door ranges between 3 and 18 years - depending on the frequency of use - such repetition inevitably causes wear and tear to its springs.

If you want to know more about when it’s time to undergo a garage door repair or service for common spring types, make sure you read the rest of this blog. Waiting until it malfunctions can result in injuries to you or your family and damage to your car, so it’s not something that you want to risk!

Torsion Springs

These springs are the most affordable and most commonly used for residential garage doors and mounted on a torsion pole just above the door opening.

To evaluate the state of this type of spring, simply pull your door half-way up and then let go. They should stay in place with minimal movement (without you having to lift them up). If your door is heavy and cannot stay in place, it is a sign that your garage door torsion springs need to be replaced.

Extension Spring

These springs are known for their durability. They are attached to the tilt arm and run along the side of the horizontal door. The signs of faulty extension springs are similar to that of torsion springs. Nonetheless, there are additional ways to determine whether your springs are performing at their best.

Look for gaps within the spring (ie, the coils not sitting tightly together). This is a sign that the material that your spring is made from has loosened, which is not desirable and can pose issues. You can also tell by looking at the far ends of your garage door and comparing them. If they are not aligned (such as one side sitting higher than another), it could be a sign that one of your springs have given way.

Faulty garage door springs that are not replaced can lead to frustrating situations requiring emergency servicing. In the worst-case scenarios, they can lead to serious injury or damage to your vehicle.

We recommend that you have your garage door serviced every 12 months by a qualified technician. Not only does this proactive approach reduces the risk of major problems in the future, but it also ensures your warranty remains valid.
